Dunedin beach photography session | Hannah + Sam

Dunedin beach session with Hannah + Sam, running around & having a blast while we did it. Capturing some rad moments in this photography session for these two at one of Dunedin’s many beautiful beaches – Smail’s Beach. It’s the perfect place to take in some lush scenery while breathing in some salty, ocean air. A way to appreciate what nature within our beautiful New Zealand has on offer.

Hannah, Sam and I headed down to this hidden gem one stunning winters evening. This was actually the evening of the winter solace (the shortest day of the year). Here we were spoilt with the most beautiful light that every photographer dreams about.

Does the lighting really matter for my photography session?

People often ask me if sunset or golden hour light really makes a difference in the look of their photos, and is it that important? The photography from this beach session speaks for itself. Soft lighting for any couples, engagement and wedding photography portraiture is paramount. Harsh lighting or midday sun can be very unflattering on the human subject. It causes unwanted shadows over the facial features, and limits options for angles when photographing a subject. Although any great photographer should be able to work with any given light scenario, if it can be helped, morning or evening light is always a winner. This Dunedin beach session is a prime example!

I feel like we’ll be awkward in front of the camera for our wedding or engagement photography session – can you help?

Don’t stress! I’m here to help and make it fun! Remember that 99 percent of couples or people in general that I photograph aren’t models. It’s totally normal to feel a bit camera shy in the beginning of a session. It’s part of my job description to help you relax. I like to keep my style of shooting natural, with small amount of direction in a way that you probably won’t even notice its happening. Keeping you moving and having fun (and hopefully making you giggle) while you do it is the best way to create some candid and intimate moments, just like we did here with Hannah + Sam.
